In between conversations by Jaime Pacena II

Viewed In between conversations exhibition by Jaime Pacena II at Artinformal Gallery.

Happy to catch up with Sir J, who was a former professor at UST CFAD during my time. He wasn’t my prof back then but he often hung out with students at the campus pavilion so everybody knew him well. He is currently a faculty member of Asia Pacific College.

The exhibition was a mix of large scale paintings, collages, archives, videos and photographs from his 10-year practice which shows his growing relationship with his son, his reflections during the pandemic and his creative process over the years as a multimedia artist, painter, educator and curator. He plans to recreate this exhibition after another decade.

One of his works that caught our attention is the script, entitled “Kono Basho” (This Place). Lucky to hear a portion of the story from him first hand. Wish we had the full day to read the entire script. Later on, we learned that Kono Basho was part of the Top 20 semifinalists for Cinemalaya 2024 Full-length Film category!

It’s also fascinating to know that a “flickering effect” from his works was accidental. We noticed that from his work entitled, “Flashes,” an acrylic on canvas and digital photography on a single screen. You can see a glimpse of it on my reel:

Seeing his works done within a span of 10 years gave me so much realizations and floating questions as we walked out of the gallery. Questions that make you think are not usually easy to answer, right? Would love to see more of his works as he continues to evolve and experiment.

J Pacena’s large scale works are for sale. For inquiries, please message the gallery / gallerist tagged in the artworks on the post below:

Update (08/19/2023): Kono Basho is one of Cinemalaya’s full-length finalists for the 20th anniversary of Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival!
